Beginnings and Present

The medical center began operations on October 16, 1997. With an initial investment of $80 million, the new hospital included 148 beds that were all located in private rooms. By 1999, the hospital added a $1.5 million expansion with a new wing for their intensive care unit. By 2005, their four-bed pediatric emergency department opened. The hospital’s major expansion project, which cost $100 million, was completed. This included expanding the hospital’s capacity, a bigger Emergency Department and Labor and Delivery unit, a new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a second medical office building, and more parking space.

At present, Summerlin Hospital Medical Center has over 20 years of service, a 485-bed capacity with private rooms, and an estimated staff population of 1,760 employees with 1,478 physicians on staff. Three Summerlin Medical office buildings house nearly 300 physicians who specialize in over 30 areas of care.

Services

The Summerlin hospital medical center offers a number of specialty services. The hospital is home to a robotic surgery center, a heart center, a rehab center for acute rehabilitation care, a cancer center, a breast care center, and a birthplace and children’s medical center.  The hospital is also known as a stroke and chest pain center for rapid diagnosis, intervention and treatment of strokes and heart attacks.

Other services include breast care, cancer care, cardiology, Centrx pharmacy, children’s medical care, ear, nose and throat care, emergency care, gastroenterology care, maternity care, orthopedics, palliative care, radiology, rehabilitation, and respiratory therapy.

The medical center also has a variety of outpatient services, including occupational and physical therapy for adults, occupational, speech, and physical therapy for children, cardiac rehabilitation, as well as a wound healing center that offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Minor surgery, radiology, and laboratory services are also available as outpatient services.

Summerlin Hospital has the first neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric emergency room in Las Vegas’ western suburbs. They also have the largest acute-hospital rehabilitation facility in Las Vegas which features a 4,000-square-foot therapy area that caters to patients who are recovering from spinal cord injuries, orthopedic surgeries, neurological injuries or disorders, impairments caused by head injuries and strokes and complicated medical cases after long-term hospital stays.

Community Work

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center has been supporting a number of nonprofit community organizations, including the United Way of Southern Nevada, American Heart Association, March of Dime, Candlelighters Cancer Foundation, Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, American Lung Association and the Nevada Hospital Association. The hospital also works along with several local oncology support groups. Employees also actively provide their time to volunteer in assisting a wide range of civic, healthcare, and community-based organizations. The hospital organizes an annual women and children’s health fair which features free health screenings and wellness education.
